PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been sentenced by the High Court to 15 years in jail and a total fine of RM11.4bil after he was found guilty in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) case.
Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah said he has considered all the mitigating factors by the defence and the aggravating factors by the prosecution.
"I've taken into consideration the cases cited and the principles of law. I have also considered the public interest element and the principle of deterrence, the length of his public service and other mitigating factors," he said.
For the first four charges of abuse of power, the former prime minister is sentenced to 15 years in jail for each charge, while the fine is in default of 40 years in jail.
For the 21 charges of money laundering, Najib is sentenced to five years for each charge. No fine is imposed.
All of the jail time is ordered to run concurrently.
Justice Sequerah also ordered that the jail time only take effect after Najib completes his six-year prison time in the SRC International case.
Najib is expected to complete his jail term in the SRC International case on Aug 23, 2028.
Najib's defence team requested that his bail sum be returned, and this was not objected to by the prosecution.
"In the circumstances, the court orders for the return of the bail sum," Justice Sequerah said.
Najib's lead counsel, Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah, told the court that the defence was not applying for a stay of execution at the moment.
"But we would like this to be on record, the non-application of stay is with liberty to apply," he said.
Justice Sequerah said the court took note of the request.
