1MDB verdict: High Court convicts Najib on all 25 charges in RM2.3bil case


PUTRAJAYA: Datuk Seri Najib Razak has been found guilty of all 25 charges in the 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) trial.

Justice Collin Lawrence Sequerah, in his broad grounds of judgment, said that the defence had failed to raise a reasonable doubt in the prosecution's case.

"After having considered and evaluated the evidence, there is overwhelming cogent evidence, both direct and indirect, which led to the inevitable conclusion that the defence is incapable of raising reasonable doubt in the case," he said here on Friday (Dec 26).

The judge, who took five accumulated hours to read the decision, began reading at 9.30am.

After a long break in the afternoon to make way for Friday prayers, Justice Sequerah concluded his judgment around 5pm.

In his decision, Justice Sequerah rejected Najib's Arab donation defence where he said Najib's narrative was "not meritorious".

He also found four Arab letters, which Najib claimed came from the Saudi royals, to be fake.

Shortly after the conviction, Najib's lead counsel Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah sought a quick 30-minute break before mitigation began for Najib's sentencing.

Justice Sequerah allowed the request.

Najib was charged with four counts of using his position to obtain RM2.28bil gratification from 1MDB's funds and 21 counts of money laundering involving the same amount.

The abuse of power offences were allegedly committed at an AmIslamic Bank Bhd branch, Jalan Raja Chulan, Bukit Ceylon between Feb 24, 2011 and Dec 19, 2014.

Meanwhile, the money laundering offences were allegedly committed at the same location between March 22 and Aug 30, 2013.
