BUTTERWORTH: Thousands of colourful, glimmering lights and gently falling “snow”, along with larger-than-life scenes of Santa Claus climbing the roof and a sleigh poised for take-off have turned a home in Teluk Air Tawar here into a seasonal showstopper in the neighbourhood.
From carefully chosen ornaments and Christmas-themed sofa covers to a thoughtfully decorated dining area, every corner of the house reflects warmth and refined holiday aesthetics.
The 47-year-old’s home has generated a buzz online, with visitors and passers-by posting videos and photos of the elaborate decorations on social media.
“It comes from a labour of love for all things Christmas,” Christe said, adding that the tradition of decorating her home began years ago as a simple family activity.
This year, the family spent about RM25,000 mainly for lighting, maintenance of existing decorations, the purchase of new items and the installation of a snow machine.
“The highlight this year is definitely the snow machine, which adds a unique festive experience,” she said, noting that the lighting display had also been enhanced with new decorative elements.
Christe said planning the layout took several weeks, while the actual installation was completed over a few days.
It was a joint family effort involving her husband, Charles Dorney, 52, and their son, although additional help was needed for the roof lighting.
“We put up a few thousand LED lights throughout the house, garden and roof area,” she said.
Christe added that the home also features multiple Christmas trees, including a 3m-tall main tree and five others of varying sizes.
Many of the decorations, including Christmas-themed sofa covers, were purchased from specialty retailers, while certain items were custom-made to suit the overall theme.
“My sister lives in Australia and sends decorations over as well,” she said.
She added that most of the pieces had been collected throughout the years, with new elements introduced annually to refresh the display.
For Christe, decorating is more than just a festive activity.
“It strengthens family bonds and reflects the spirit of Christmas,” she said.
Christe also welcomes members of the public who want to view the decorations and take photographs.
“Christmas represents sharing joy and togetherness.
“Opening our home allows families and children to enjoy the festive atmosphere and create meaningful memories,” she said.
