Northern flood victims start returning home

KUALA LUMPUR: The number of flood evacuees in relief centres in Pahang, Kelantan and Terengganu dropped yesterday evening, while the situation remains unchanged in Johor.

In an earlier update, authorities said a total of 15,358 flood evacuees were housed in the network of PPS across the four states.

In Pahang, there were 12,226 evacuees from 4,052 families at 79 relief centres (PPS) as of 4.40pm compared to 13,472 evacuees at 81 centres in the morning, with 10,573 people in 47 centres in Kuantan, followed by Pekan (965 people in 11 centres), Rompin (353 people in eight centres), Maran (161 people in four centres), Jerantut (145 people in four centres) and Lipis (five people in one centre).

According to a Bernama report, Temerloh (22 people in three centres) and Bera (two people in one centre) are the latest districts in Pahang to be hit by floods.

In Terengganu, the number of evacuees dropped to 1,202 people from 340 families as of 5pm compared to 1,344 people in the morning, with 951 people from 269 families in 14 centres in Kemaman, and 251 people from 71 families in two centres in Dungun. Two centres in Hulu Terengganu closed at noon, with all evacuees allowed to return home.

Based on publicinfobanjir.water.gov.my, water levels at seven river stations have exceeded the alert stage.

In Kelantan, there are 74 evacuees from 22 families at four centres in Kuala Krai yesterday evening compared to 186 people in the morning.

In Johor, 356 people from 93 families remain in Mersing, while four rivers are at warning levels: Sungai Muar at Kampung Awat, Segamat, with a reading of 19.86m; Sungai Muar at Buloh Kasap, Segamat (8.41m); Sungai Lenik at Ladang Cha’ah, Batu Pahat (6.64m); and Sungai Kampung Labong in Mersing, recording 1.82m.
