Firefighter injured while battling supermarket blaze in Johor Baru

JOHOR BARU: A 23-year-old fireman suffered minor injuries on his right shoulder when he was hit by falling plaster cement while putting out the fire at a supermarket.

Bomba Zone 1 senior operations commander Mohd Fadhil Md Ruday said the incident took place at the supermarket in Jalan Seroja 56, Taman Johor Jaya, on Wednesday (Dec 17).

“The fireman from the Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue station received early treatment by our Emergency Medical Response Service Unit (EMRS) before being sent to the Sultan Ismail Hospital,’’ he said in a statement on Wednesday.

Mohd Fadhil said the Johor Fire and Rescue Department Operation Centre received an emergency call regarding the fire at 7.21am and arrived at the site located about 1km from the Johor Jaya Fire and Rescue station at 7.23am.

“The fire raged through the one-and-a-half-storey light industrial factory building, which has been used as the distribution and wholesale centre for the supermarket,’’ he said.

Mohd Fadhil said the fire destroyed 70% of the building and damaged several nearby premises.

He mentioned that the ongoing operation to contain the fire involved 30 firefighters from the Johor Jaya, Larkin, and Tebrau Fire and Rescue stations, as well as the Operation Response Team from the Mount Austin Volunteer Fire Brigade.
