Edra strengthens commitment to mangrove restoration at Jimah

Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd launches the second phase of its mangrove rehabilitation initiative at the Jimah Power Plant in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan, reaffirming its commitment to environmental conservation and the preservation of biodiversity.

KUALA LUMPUR: Edra Power Holdings Sdn Bhd (Edra or the company) launched the second phase of its mangrove rehabilitation initiative at the company’s Jimah Power Plant in Port Dickson, Negri Sembilan.

The programme saw the planting of 1,000 additional saplings and the establishment of a mangrove nursery featuring Sonneratia and Avicennia species, both acting as the first line of coastal defence and supporting the breeding of other mangrove species.

Building on last year’s success, this green initiative further demonstrates Edra’s commitment to environmental conservation, with a total of 2,000 mangrove saplings now planted along the plant’s coastal area to date.

The initiative was carried out in collaboration with the Malaysian Nature Society and the Department of Environment of Negri Sembilan, with Edra employees and members of  the local community including the Persatuan Nelayan Kawasan Port Dickson participating  in the planting activity.

Jimah Power Plant acting power station manager Muhammad Mazli Ismail Jamail said the initiative represents a continuation of Edra’s mangrove rehabilitation efforts and strengthens community participation in environmental preservation which supports the company’s broader Environmental, Social and Governance goals.

“This initiative highlights how collaboration can drive meaningful action in protecting our environment.

“By planting these mangroves and establishing a dedicated nursery, we are laying the foundation for a sustainable green ecosystem that nurtures biodiversity, creates thriving habitats for wildlife and ensures a continuous supply of seedlings for future restoration efforts within Edra and the wider community.

“Over time, these efforts will help curb coastline erosion and bring socio-economic benefits to the local community through eco-tourism and the revitalisation of marine resources,” he said.

He added that the project aligns with Malaysia’s 100 Million Tree Planting Campaign and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, noting that Edra will continue leading environmental initiatives while integrating sustainability into its operations and corporate culture.

Under the first phase of this initiative, 1,000 mangrove saplings were successfully planted within the power plant area last year.
