WITHIN an hour, Hasma Yasin, 54, is able to sell 150 packets of nasi lemak from her small stall in Felda Kota Gelanggi Dua, Jerantut, Pahang.

The mother of five said nasi lemak is not just a daily staple but it has become her family’s main source of income after her husband Sharif Mat’s earnings declined as a palm oil settler.

Hasma told Utusan Malaysia that she began selling nasi lemak to support her family.

“Each packet is priced at RM2.50 and comes with egg and anchovies. Thank God, the nasi lemak sells fast every day.

“I earn between RM80 and RM100 a day, which goes towards daily expenses, my children’s school needs and other necessities,” she said.

Warung Hasma is popular not only among students and labourers but it also receives orders for tahlil ceremonies and meetings.

While the rainy season does affect sales, Hasma remains committed to preparing between 100 and 150 packets of nasi lemak daily.

> Actress Maya Karin has come forward to explain the concept and design of the mermaid costume used in her latest film, Duyung: Lagenda Aurora, following criticism from some netizens who labelled it as looking “cheap”.

Maya, 46, said the costume was designed based on the script.

“In the previous Duyung film in 2008, the colours were more natural.

“The costumes were also very heavy and difficult to wear.

“This time, the producers and production team wanted to make things easier, not only for the actors but also for the crew.

“In this film, we wanted to brighten and enhance the colours of the sea so they are balanced with the fish, corals and other elements,” she told Berita Harian when met at an award show last Friday.

She further stressed the film directed by Assoc Prof Datuk Dr A. Razak Mohaideen does not only focus on the aspect of costume design, but emphasises on quality and storyline.

“What’s special about this film is that the mermaids have their own powers, can walk on land and also swim.

“Hopefully, these differences will satisfy audiences.”

The criticism followed the recent release of the film’s trailer, with some netizens comparing the costumes worn by Maya and co-star Anna Jobling to those in the earlier Duyung film, which they felt appeared more realistic.

Duyung: Lagenda Aurora is scheduled to be released in cinemas nationwide on Dec 25.
