PETALING JAYA: The country’s inflation for July eased due to a drop in transport prices.
In a statement on the Consumer Price Index (CPI), the Statistics Department (DOSM) said inflation rose 1.8% last month, compared to 1.9% in June.
“Inflation for the transport group moderated to 1.4% in July, as compared to 2.8% in June.
“This was attributed to the operation of the personal transport equipment subgroup, which recorded a slower increase of 1.3%, compared to 3.1% in June.
“The subgroups of transport services for goods and the purchase of vehicles continued to record a decrease in July at -1.3% and -0.2%, respectively,” it said yesterday, adding that the subgroup of public transport services remained at 6.5%.
It also said that the implementation of the Budi Diesel mechanism in July contributed to the slower increase in the transport group.
For food and beverages, which contributes nearly 30% of the total CPI weight, inflation increased 1.8% in July, compared to 1.4% in June.
DOSM said the increase was due to a hike in food away from home and food at home.
Inflation in personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods and services moderated to 2.9% in July from 3.4% in June, followed by restaurant and accommodation services at 2% from 2.6% and education at 2% from 2.1%.
