Durian Tunggal shooting: Cops committed to ensure transparent investigation, says IGP

KUALA LUMPUR: The police are committed to ensuring the investigation into the shooting incident at Durian Tunggal will be conducted transparently and in accordance with the law, says Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail.

The Inspector-General of Police said the investigation is aimed at achieving justice for all involved.

"We will not compromise in taking action against any wrongdoing," he said in a statement on Tuesday (Dec 16).

Earlier, the Attorney General Chambers (AGC) had instructed that the investigation into the shooting incident in Durian Tuggal in Melaka be reclassified as murder.

"Based on the briefing and suggestion made by the police, the AGC has agreed and instructed that the investigation be reclassified under section 302 of the Penal Code for murder," it said in a statement.

The IGP said the police had referred the investigation paper into the shooting to the AGC.

"After scrutinising the investigation paper, the AGC instructed that the investigation be reclassified under Section 302 of the Penal Code," he added.

On Nov 24, Melaka police chief Deputy Comm Datuk Dzulkhairi Mukhtar reportedly said that three criminals, aged between 24 and 29, were shot dead after one of them attacked a policeman with a machete at an oil palm plantation in Durian Tunggal.

The 4am incident left a corporal, in his early 30s, seriously injured in his left arm.

All the suspects, believed to be members of the Durian Tunggal Gang, were detected while on their way to rob premises.

The gang had reportedly been active since early 2024 and is linked to 20 cases in Melaka, and one case each in Negeri Sembilan and Selangor, causing losses amounting to RM1.35mil.

Previously, the IGP said that the police had received a compact disc (CD) related to the shooting incident by a family member of one of the suspects on Dec 6.

He added that the CD is believed to contain an audio recording of a telephone conversation between one of the suspects and his wife prior to the incident.
