SEREMBAN: The Customs Department has dealt a severe blow to a drug syndicate here with the seizure of 638kg of cannabis buds, worth some RM62.5mil, in a raid in Seri Kembangan, Selangor.

Customs deputy director-general (Enforcement and Compliance) Siti Mang said the drugs were seized from a double-storey house on Dec 2.

"This is the biggest haul of cannabis buds recorded by Customs this year.

"We believe the premises had been used to repack the drugs," she told reporters at the Customs headquarters (narcotics) in Kg Jijan near here on Tuesday (Dec 16).

Siti said her officers carried out the raid after a two-week surveillance.

She said no arrests were made as the house was vacant at the time.

"We believe those behind the illegal activity escaped upon realising the presence of my officers," she said, adding that the drugs were found concealed in 17 boxes.

Siti said the house was believed to have been rented by the syndicate since September.

She said the syndicate tried to hoodwink the authorities by concealing the drugs in microfibre bedsheet packaging.

"(The drugs are) believed to be for export," she added.

Customs officers also seized a motorcycle, a vacuum sealer and weighing equipment.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
