Croc attack on the rise: Sabah govt urged to manage human-wildlife conflicts


KOTA KINABALU: Crocodile attacks are on the rise and the state government has been asked to address this fatal problem.

Tanjung Aru assemblyman Datuk Junz Wong said this was based on statistics from the Wildlife Department.

“In 2021, there were three reported deaths from crocodile attacks and six in 2022. In 2023, there were nine fatalities and in Oct 2024, there were 11 deaths and two injuries,” he said when giving his debate speech on the 2026 Budget.

He said the alarming figures require more focus from the state government on managing human-wildlife conflicts.

Wong said crocodiles have been reportedly seen in many areas in the city, as well as in Pulau Gaya, which is under his constituency.

“If possible, we need to address this issue and we need to have funding for this. We need the state government to take action,” he said.
