Immigration raids lead to detention of 49 illegal immigrants in Johor

JOHOR BARU: A total of 49 illegal immigrants believed to be working without permits were detained by the Immigration Department in 16 raids here.

Johor Immigration director Datuk Mohd Rusdi Mohd Darus said the operation began at 12.10am on Saturday (Dec 13).

“A total of 24 enforcement personnel carried out 16 raids at shop houses and residential premises around Johor Jaya here.

“All the foreigners were resting inside the premises and some attempted to flee and hide on rooftops, but were successfully apprehended,” he said in a statement on Sunday (Dec 14).

He added that those detained included 12 Myanmar men, 11 Pakistani men, 8 Bangladeshi men, 2 Indonesian men, 12 Myanmar women, and 4 Indonesian women, aged 20 to 49.

“Checks revealed that they did not possess valid travel documents and had overstayed their permitted period.

“All of them are being investigated under the Immigration Act 1959/63 and have been sent to the Setia Tropika Immigration Depot,” he said.
