Sabah STAR says it now supports GRS-led state government

KOTA KINABALU: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Sabah STAR) now says it supports the Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS)-led state government based on the wishes of party members and division heads, says its president Datuk Seri Dr Jeffrey Kitingan.

In a statement on Facebook, he said the decision reflects the majority view of the party as well as to ensure political stability in Sabah.

He said this was necessary as GRS, led by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor, did not secure enough seats to form a government on its own following the recent Sabah polls.

"GRS proposed the formation of a unity government for political stability, which is also in line with Sabah STAR's position," read the statement on Friday (Dec 12),

He added that Sabah STAR is not formally part of the GRS coalition.

Kitingan said supporting the unity government does not mean the party is abandoning its struggle and continues to champion Sabah’s rights.

Sabah STAR won two seats in the recent polls.

This comes after Kitingan was seated with government backbenchers during the first sitting of the 17th Sabah State Assembly.

On Dec 2, Kitingan said Sabah STAR would not join the government, saying that the party would be part of the Opposition.

This came after the party's other assemblyman, Datuk Mohd Ishak Ayub (Bingkor), was appointed as a state assistant minister.
