Melaka's Pink Bus viral video under JPJ probe

MELAKA: The Melaka Road Transport Department (JPJ) is investigating the driver of the state’s stage bus service, commonly known as the Pink Bus, following the circulation of a video showing dangerous driving along a road close to a residential area in Durian Tunggal here.

The viral video showed a Pink Bus operated under the Bas My service and a car being driven recklessly at Taman Angkasa Nuri here, raising serious safety concerns among road users.

Melaka JPJ director Siti Zarina Mohd Yusop said notices to attend an interview, under Section 114 of the Road Transport Act 1987, have been issued to the concessionaire of the stage bus service appointed by the Transport Ministry and the owner of the car.

She said the department viewed the incident seriously and commenced investigations immediately, including efforts to identify the individuals who were driving both vehicles at that point in time.

"There will be no compromise when it comes to actions that endanger road safety,” she said in a statement on Wednesday (Dec 10).

Siti Zarina said that upon conviction, offenders could face imprisonment of up to five years and a fine ranging from RM5,000 to RM15,000 for a first offence, while a second conviction carries a jail term of up to 10 years and a fine of up to RM20,000.

She added that drivers of public transport services may also be investigated under Section 22 of the Land Public Transport Act 2010 for misconduct involving drivers or conductors, which carries penalties of a fine between RM1,000 and RM500,000, a maximum imprisonment of two years, or both.

Siti Zarina reminded road users not to treat public roads as a platform for provocation, stressing that traffic regulations are enforced to protect the safety of all.

She also urged members of the public to channel information related to traffic violations to JPJ or the nearest enforcement agency to assist ongoing investigations.
