DIY decor brings warmth to hospital

KOTA KINABALU: A simple idea from Hospital Lahad Datu in Sabah’s east coast has turned into a Christmas joy, reflecting its caring spirit for patients and their families.

Staff members from the hospital’s radiology department wanted their workplace to feel brighter for the festive season and decided to create something cheerful for patients and colleagues.

A viral video shows a warmly lit department decorated with Christmas trees, colourful lights and festive ornaments that transformed the clinic setting into a cosy, welcoming space.

“We didn’t expect it to go viral,” said radiology department head Dr Jeyaraaj Jeyabalan, when contacted.

“The idea came from our own staff. They wanted to lift the mood in the department and bring joy to everyone who walks in.”

The decorations were created by 23 staff members including radiographers and support workers.

They stayed back after work or used their breaks to decorate.

The effort was guided by Judey John, who encouraged colleagues to contribute whatever they could, whether it be material, ideas or extra time.

Dr Jeyaraaj said all costs were covered through voluntary contributions from staff, and no hospital funds were involved.

He said the main goal was to create a positive environment for patients and families who may be going through stressful moments.

“We hope it brings comfort, warmth and a sense of happiness to everyone who enters the department.

“It reminds us of the importance of unity, compassion and working together,” he said.
