'I did not know he was re-marrying,' says ex-wife of man who died in ravine crash

HULU TERENGGANU: The ex-wife of the man who died when his car plunged into a ravine here says she had no inkling that he was getting re-married.

Che Norhashimah Hassan, 50, said she received a call from the Hulu Terengganu district police headquarters at 8.15pm, informing her that her ex-husband, 52-year-old Hassan Shazali, had died when the SUV he was in fell into a ravine on Jalan Kuala Jeneris-Sungai Gawi-Aring in Bukit Kawah.

Sinar Harian reported her as saying that she had no knowledge of her late ex-husband's plans to remarry on Dec 25 as they had divorced and lived apart.

"We had not been in contact for almost three months, so I was very shocked. I never imagined something like this would happen," she said when met at the Hulu Terengganu Hospital on Saturday (Dec 6).

Che Norhashimah, a teacher, said she travelled to Hulu Terengganu from Gua Musang, Kelantan with her brother.

She has five children aged from eight to 24.

She added that her ex-husband truly cared for the family and never neglected his children.

Hassan, who was also a teacher, and the other victim, 34-year-old Suzaimah Che Azis, a school canteen operator, died at the scene.

The eldest child of the late teacher, who is currently pursuing a postgraduate diploma in Education, said he last spoke to his father on Wednesday (Dec 3).

The post-mortem examination on both victims at Hulu Terengganu Hospital was completed at around 2pm on Saturday.

Hassan's body was claimed by his family for burial in Kedai Menanti, Pasir Puteh, Kelantan, while Suzaimah will be laid to rest at Kampung Lebir Muslim Cemetery in Gua Musang, Kelantan.

The accident occurred at approximately 5.30pm on Friday (Dec 5) at a closed section of the road.
