THE plight of two Indian traders getting evicted from their longtime stall in Johor brought out a show of support from the local community, Makkal Osai reported.
A. Letchumi, 52, who is a blind single mother, has been selling flowers at the car park in front of a temple in Kulai Besar since 2003. Another trader, a disabled man identified as Murali, 42, has been running a stall selling prayer items next to her for the past five years.
Letchumi said she has been paying rent to the temple for the stall space.
The stall has supported her for 22 years while Murali also depends on the income from his stall for livelihood.
Recently, the temple ordered both stalls to vacate. The reason for this is not clear.
Indian residents from the surrounding areas gathered at the temple to voice their displeasure at the way the two stall operators are being treated by the temple.
Local activist Vani Shri, who helped organise the peaceful gathering, said they intend to bring this matter to state exco member Raven Kumar Krishnasamy, the Kulai Municipal Council and the land office to ensure the traders get justice.
