Man, 71, killed at zebra crossing in Bayan Lepas


GEORGE TOWN: A 71-year-old man was killed after being hit by a car on a zebra crossing in Bayan Lepas.

The incident occurred at about 2.55pm on Wednesday (April 1) along Jalan Tun Dr Awang, near the Bayan Lepas roundabout, as the victim was crossing the road.

George Town OCPD Asst Comm Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the car, driven by a 19-year-old man, was travelling from Bayan Lepas towards George Town when it struck the pedestrian.

“The victim sustained severe injuries and was rushed to Penang Hospital where he was later pronounced dead at about 12.05am on April 2,” he said in a statement.

He added that the driver did not suffer any injuries in the incident.

ACP Abdul Rozak said investigations are ongoing under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 for causing death by reckless or dangerous driving.

Members of the public who witnessed the incident or have information are urged to come forward to assist in the investigation.
