Jan 13 next pre-trial date for retired teacher charged with caning student

GEORGE TOWN: A Magistrate's Court here has set Jan 13 for case management in the matter of a retired teacher charged with caning a student.

Choong Kean Beng, 59, who appeared calm in court on Thursday (Dec 4), was told that case management would be held next year before Magistrate Tunku Intan Nadiah Tunku Mohammed Nazarin.

Outside the court, Choong's lawyer Lee Zhi Qing said the prosecution has handed over all pertinent documents to the defence team.

"Now we will have to see what other documents are needed on the next date and we will be submitting a letter of representation," she said.

On Oct 6, Choong was charged with intentionally causing injury to a then 15-year-old student with a cane in the discipline room of SMJK (C) Chung Hwa Confucian here at around 5.30pm on Dec 6, 2023.

The charge was framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt by using a dangerous weapon or means, which carries a maximum 10-year jail term, a fine or caning, or both, upon conviction.

In a separate court on Oct 6, secondary school teacher Lau Teik Hwa, 47, claimed trial to charges of intentionally causing injury to the same student by using a cane in the school's discipline room.

The incident was said to have taken place at around 4pm on Aug 2, 2023.

Lau was charged under the same legislation.

Both pleaded not guilty.
