High tides expected to flood 41 Terengganu villages, DID warns


KUALA TERENGGANU: A total of 41 villages located in 12 river estuaries in Terengganu are expected to be flooded following the high tide phenomenon predicted to begin on Thursday (Dec 4) and continue until next Wednesday.

Terengganu Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) director Osman Abdullah said that the overflow of seawater on the coast and estuaries could cause flooding in nearby villages and along the coast if rain occurs simultaneously with the high tide.

According to him, in the Kuala Terengganu district, the locations at risk are Kampung Kubang Ikan, Kampung Kuala Ibai, Taman Purnama, Kampung Pulau Rusa, Kampung Sekati and Kampung Pulau Ketam while in the Kuala Nerus district, it involves Kampung Baru Seberang Takir, Kampung Seberang Takir, Kampung Ulu Takir, Kampung Pak Tuyu and Kampung Tanjung Gelam.

"In the Dungun district, the areas expected to be affected are Kampung Seberang Pintasan, Kampung Teluk Bidara, Kampung Tanjung Jara, Kg Che Lijah, Kampung Alor Makbah, Kampung Bijangga, Kampung Sungai Buaya, Kampung Sura, Kampung Kuala Paka, Kampung Tebing Tembah, Kampung Pinang Merah and Kampung Durian Mentangau.

"In the Marang district, the locations expected to be flooded are Kampung Rusila, Kampung Rhu Dua, Kampung Rhu Rendang, Kampung Mercang, Kampung Pulau Rusa Baru," he said when contacted on Thursday.

Osman said that in the Setiu district, the locations predicted to be affected are Kampung Gong Batu, Kampung Pengkalan Gelap, Kampung Limau Nipis, Kampung Kuala Setiu, Kampung Fikiri and Kampung Telaga Papan.

In addition, Osman also listed four locations in the Kemaman district that are expected to be affected, namely Pulau Skepeng, Pengkalan Cicar Bukit Kuang, Kampung Bakau Tinggi and Kampung Baru Kemasik.

"In the Besut district, the areas affected are Kampung Pengkalan Atap, Kampung Teluk Budu, Kampung Pantai and Kampung Nail," he said.

He advised residents in the affected areas to be alert to weather developments and heed the authorities' instructions.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) on Wednesday also warned of continuous rain at alert level in Kelantan, Terengganu, Sabah, Johor, Pahang and Sarawak from Friday to Monday. - Bernama
