Hashim Hamzah takes oath as Chief Judge of Malaya


PUTRAJAYA: Court of Appeal Judge Datuk Hashim Hamzah has taken his oath of office and allegiance as the Chief Judge of Malaya.

Hashim, 64, was sworn to the post, the third-highest position in the Malaysian judicial system, before High Court Senior Judge Datuk Akhtar Tahir.

The ceremony, held at the Palace of Justice on Wednesday (Dec 3), was also attended by Court of Appeal president Datuk Abu Bakar Jais and Chief Justice of Sabah and Sarawak Datuk Azizah Nawawi.

Four Court of Appeal judges also took the oath of office and allegiance as Federal Court Judges before Chief Justice Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Farid Wan Salleh.

They are Datuk Mohd Nazlan Mohd Ghazali, 58, Datuk Che Mohd Ruzima Ghazali, 64, Datuk Collin Lawrence Sequerah, 65, and Datuk Azimah Omar, 63. The appointments take effect on Wednesday.

Hashim was appointed as a Judicial Commissioner on Nov 1, 2012, and became a High Court judge two years later. On March 19, 2021, he was elevated to the Court of Appeal.

Born in Penang, Hashim graduated from the Faculty of Law, Universiti Malaya, in 1985. He has served in various capacities within the judicial and legal services, including as a Magistrate, Sessions Court judge and Head of the Prosecution Unit in the Deputy Public Prosecutor's Office in Perak and Kedah.

He also served as a senior deputy registrar and later senior registrar of the Federal Court before being absorbed into the judiciary. – Bernama
