Undergrad nabbed for obstructing cops in Jeli

KOTA BARU: An undergraduate student at an institution of higher learning in Jeli has been arrested for obstructing the police and driving recklessly during a check by a mobile patrol vehicle unit.

Jeli OCPD Supt Kamarulzaman Harun said in a statement that the incident occurred at 3.30pm on Monday (Dec 1) when a police patrol spotted a car being driven in a suspicious manner in Kampung Sungai Rual.

He said the driver refused to cooperate when the patrol waved him down, and sped off.

The team then gave chase and the suspect drove recklessly before he was finally stopped at Kampung Rabbana in Jeli, he added.

"The driver then tried to escape, leading to a scuffle before he was arrested.

"A check of the car found a teenage schoolgirl inside," Supt Kamarulzaman added.

Investigations indicated that both individuals, who do not have criminal records, panicked at the sight of the police patrol, he said.

The case is being investigated under Sections 186 (obstructing a public servant) and 279 (rash or negligent driving) of the Penal Code, and a remand application will be made on the driver, Supt Kamarulzaman said. – Bernama
