MP says US trade pact is mistake, urges halt to enforcement

KUALA LUMPUR: A government MP branded the Agreement on Reciprocal Trade with the United States a mistake.

Hassan Karim (PH-Pasir Gudang) said the pact signed by the Malaysian government was erroneous

He raised Article 7.2 on entry into force during debates in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday (Dec 1), asking whether the Malaysian government had exchanged a written notification with the US government.

Article 7.2 states the agreement takes effect 60 days after both parties exchange written notifications or on another date agreed by both parties.

“If this has not been done, I feel Malaysia can still be saved. If the notice is exchanged within 60 days, the agreement would come into effect,” he added.

“If the written notification has not been exchanged, I urge the government not to do so,” he added.

Hassan sought answers from the Investment, Trade and Industry Ministry on whether the notice had been exchanged

“We are not America’s puppet and we are a nation with sovereignty,” he added.

The agreement was signed by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and US President Donald Trump on October 26.
