KOTA KINABALU: A broken leg from a road accident did not deter a young man from carrying out his responsibility as a voter in the 17th Sabah State Election on Saturday (Nov 29).
Despite still recovering from injuries sustained in a collision with a lorry five months ago, 32-year-old Khalid Tahar arrived at Sekolah Kebangsaan Bahang, Penampang, one of the polling centres in the Kepayan constituency, in crutches.
Khalid, a construction worker, said the accident occurred on June 1 while he was on his way back to his hometown in Kudat, leaving him with a fractured right leg that required surgery and the insertion of a cast.
"Even in this condition, I feel physically capable of coming out to vote. This is my responsibility as a Sabahan. If we are healthy and able, we should do what we can - no one can force us," he told Bernama.
Also casting their ballots at the same polling centre were siblings Fammytria Harteno, 22; Fellytria Harteno, 25; and their eldest sister, Fiffytria Harteno, 28.
They woke up as early as 6 am to go to the polling centre despite the rainy weather.
As second-time voters in the State Election, the siblings said they felt more confident in selecting the best candidate compared to their first experience in 2022.
Fammytria, who works in the medical field, said the voting process was smooth and the polling centre was easy to navigate, thanks to the assistance of Election Commission (EC) officers. - Bernama
