PETALING JAYA: After several days of rescue operations, all 6,222 Malaysians trapped in the flooding in Hat Yai, Thailand, have been safely evacuated, according to the Foreign Ministry (Wisma Putra).
The ministry said the remaining 12 Malaysians have been brought home through Bukit Kayu Hitam.
“Malaysia expresses its deep appreciation to the Government of Thailand for its invaluable cooperation.
“The Ministry also extends its heartfelt thanks to the more than 15 Malaysian non-governmental organisations and volunteer teams whose dedication ensured the safe evacuation of all citizens.
“The Ministry also acknowledges the extraordinary contributions of rescue teams across Malaysia whose efforts reflect the nation’s enduring spirit of solidarity and compassion,” said the ministry in a statement on Saturday (Nov 29).
It added that the Consulate General in Songkhla would continue to monitor the situation and assist any Malaysians who may still require help.
At least 145 people were believed to have died in floods across Thailand, with an estimated 110 of them being in the Songkhla province.
On Nov 21, Hat Yai, a city in the province, experienced significant flooding due to unprecedented rainfall. The city recorded an extraordinary 335mm of rain on that day, marking the highest single-day total in 300 years and the most substantial rainfall the area has experienced in 15 years.
