MELAKA: Malaysians have been urged to avoid travelling to southern Thailand for the time being following a sharp escalation in violence across the region, says Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Mohd Khalid Ismail.
The IGP said the deteriorating security situation in the affected provinces poses a significant risk to visitors.
“This is not the best time for Malaysians to travel there, given the tense security situation, they should reduce their movements to the affected areas.
“Avoid travelling there for now as the situation has become increasingly volatile,” he said on Monday (Aug 24) after attending the investiture ceremony held in conjunction with the 77th birthday of Melaka Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Mohd Ali Mohd Rustam at Seri Negeri in Ayer Keroh.
He was commenting on at least 51 violent incidents reported within several hours across Narathiwat, Pattani and Yala on Sunday (Aug 23).
The attacks reportedly involved explosions, shootings and arson targeting premises, vehicles and telecommunications infrastructure.
Mohd Khalid said police have heightened security controls at all entry points along the Malaysia-Thailand border following the latest developments.
“We have stepped up security controls along the border as we are concerned about the escalating situation,” he said.
However, he added that there is no immediate need to deploy additional personnel as the situation on the Malaysian side of the border remains under control.
He also clarified that police have no plans at present to close any border crossings in the northern peninsula.
At the investiture ceremony, Mohd Khalid was conferred the Darjah Gemilang Seri Melaka (DGSM), which carries the title Datuk Seri.
