PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry has revoked the notification for cosmetic product Remy Laure Soothing Cream after it was found to contain a scheduled poison.
It said the product was found to contain hydroquinone, and the notification for the cosmetic product had therefore been revoked by the Health Ministry Pharmaceutical Services Programme director, meaning it is no longer allowed to be sold in Malaysia.
"Products containing this substance are classified as medicines and must be registered with the Drug Control Authority (DCA) before they can be marketed.
"Medicines containing hydroquinone may only be used on the advice and under the supervision of healthcare professionals, while unsupervised use may cause side effects, including unwanted changes in skin colour and hypersensitive skin," it said in a statement on Monday (Aug 24).
The ministry said the sale and distribution of the cosmetic product contravened the Control of Drugs and Cosmetics Regulations 1984.
Individuals who commit an offence under the regulations may be fined up to RM25,000 or imprisoned for up to three years, or both, for a first offence, and fined up to RM50,000 or imprisoned for up to five years, or both, for subsequent offences.
Companies found guilty of an offence may be fined up to RM50,000 for a first offence and up to RM100,000 for subsequent offences.
The ministry advised members of the public who are currently using the cosmetic product to stop using it immediately and seek advice from a healthcare professional if they experience any discomfort or adverse effects.
They are also encouraged to check the notification status of cosmetic products on the official National Pharmaceutical Regulatory Agency (NPRA) website at www.npra.gov.my. - Bernama
