KUCHING: The Sarawak government is currently gazetting nearly 6,000km of logging roads as state roads to take over their maintenance.

State Deputy Infrastructure and Port Development Minister Datuk Aidel Lariwoo said the process involved abandoned logging roads as well as active and inactive logging roads.

"Once the gazetting process is completed, the state government will take over maintenance works for these roads under the state road maintenance programme," he told Nicholas Kudi (GPS-Baleh) during question time in the Sarawak Legislative Assembly on Friday (Nov 28).

Aidel said the state Public Works Department and Forest Department had identified active logging roads connecting rural settlements in Sarawak.

He said a total of 5,977km of logging roads would be taken over under the state road maintenance programme.

In Kapit division, he added, 3,781.7km of roads were registered for maintenance under the programme.

This comprises 2,353km of state roads, 1,417.8km of village roads and 10.6km of agriculture roads.
