KUALA LUMPUR: His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia, has ordered that all essential needs of flood evacuees at temporary relief centres (PPS) be fully met, following a rise in the number of people displaced nationwide.
In a Facebook post yesterday, His Majesty instructed the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma) to ensure PPS facilities remain safe, well-maintained and capable of supporting evacuees.
“Ensure basic amenities, food supplies and medical aid are sufficiently available,” the King said through the Royal Press Office, Bernama reported.
Sultan Ibrahim also reminded the public to follow evacuation orders and avoid dangerous areas.
His Majesty also expressed appreciation to the security forces, rescue agencies, volunteers and all parties working tirelessly to assist affected communities.
Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim also told all agencies to take immediate measures to help those affected.
Nadma, he said, had been instructed to do the maximum.
“Even before I left (for the trip to three African countries), I was briefed on a weekly basis about the expected rainfall and impact on these areas and measures to be taken, including the opening of relief centres.
“I believe we are doing our best to deal with the floods,” he told reporters at the end of his visit to Kenya.
He said Nadma, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, had held meetings months ahead to ensure all preparations were in place.
He said that several flood-mitigation projects are ongoing and when completed, flooding in these areas could be avoided.
“In some areas in Kelantan, where the projects have been completed, there is a substantial reduction in impact and losses,” said Anwar.
