KUANTAN: An 11-vehicle pile-up, which also involved an express bus and oil tanker, at KM110 of the East Coast Expressway 1 (LPT1) resulted in four fatalities.
The accident is believed to have occurred on the expressway near Lanchang, heading towards Kuantan, on Monday night.
It involved six cars, two MPVs, a four-wheel-drive vehicle, an oil tanker and an express bus.
Pahang Fire and Rescue Department operations assistant director Mohd Salahuddin Isa said the department received an emergency call at 10.44pm.
He said three fire engines from Mentakab and Temerloh, along with 15 personnel, were dispatched to the scene.
He said three family members in one of the vehicles were fatally injured, while another victim was killed in a separate vehicle.
He said the victims were pronounced dead by medical personnel at the scene before their remains were handed over to the police.
Mohd Salahuddin added that two victims suffered injuries after becoming trapped in the oil tanker, while two others in separate vehicles suffered injuries.
“A total of 30 passengers in the express bus were reported safe, along with those in the five other vehicles,” reported Sinar Harian.
Mohd Salahuddin said operations concluded at about 2.50am after the area was cleared and deemed safe for traffic.
Meanwhile, Bernama reported that acting Pahang police chief Datuk Azry Akmar Ayob said the deceased victims were a married couple, Muhammad Nazatul Nazmi, 32, and Nur Atiqah Sofiya, 32, and their four-year-old son, Muhammad Armaan Nazeef, who were travelling in a Proton S70.
The other fatality was Honda CR-V passenger Seow Beng Wain, 55, from Kota Kemuning, Shah Alam, Selangor.
