Following in dad’s footsteps in Tamparuli

TUARAN: There are no hard feelings between incumbent Tamparuli assemblyman Datuk Seri Jahid Jahim, the Parti Bersatu Sabah (PBS) deputy president, and son Johan, who has thrown his hat in as an Independent candidate there.

Johan, 40, is among six Independents vying for the seat in a 13-cornered contest.

In the ring are Warisan, Upko, Parti KDM, PIS and GRS, which Jahid, who is not defending his seat, is campaigning for.

Johan said he is carrying what he termed as “the new generation’s responsibility” and wanted to propel Tamparuli towards full district status.

“I visit my father every day, updating him on the campaign trail and also my plans for Tamparuli.

“Nothing compares to my love for dad. I share everything with him – what happened, what I’m planning next. He always listens, and nods or smiles.

“As a father, he respects my decision. As a politician, he understands that a new generation will eventually rise,” he said in an interview.

Johan said his candidacy is not about extending a legacy.

“I’m not here to walk in anyone’s footsteps. I want to offer my own ideas, energy and commitment to Tamparuli folk,” he said.

Johan said his motivation to contest stemmed from a desire to see Sabah move confidently as an equal force in Malaysia.

“It is time for a new generation of Sabahans to step forward – people who understand today’s challenges and who dare to imagine a better future.

“Our youth and our state deserve bold ideas, honest leadership and someone who truly believes Sabah’s best days are ahead.”

He said Tamparuli has been close to his heart since childhood, recalling how he often trailed his father, the caretaker Sabah Rural Development Minister, as the latter went about resolving community issues.

“I grew up here, I know this place in and out, and I understand the people and how things work,” he said, adding that Tamparuli needed “real, positive development” after years of relying on the larger Tuaran constituency for basic services.

“That’s why one of my goals is to push for full district status. Only then can we have our own district office, agencies and facilities like banks, including proper emergency services like a fire station, hospital and police station.”

Johan said he did not expect his father to support his campaign, nor did he want to rely on his dad’s reputation.

“I am tied only to the people. If voters want fresh leadership from a younger generation, I humbly offer myself as their choice,” he said.
