'Musang', 'Sepet' nabbed on suspicion of involvement in ECRL cable theft cases

KUANTAN: Two men, including the leader of ‘Geng Musang’, who were previously on the police wanted list for suspected involvement in the East Coast Rail Link (ECRL) project cable theft, were arrested by the roadside at Kampung Batu 3, Mentakab, Temerloh.

Temerloh Police chief ACP Mohd Nasyim Bahron said a Cambodian male suspect, known as ‘Musang’, and a Malaysian male suspect, known as ‘Sepet’, were arrested about 9pm on Thursday.

He said a search of the two men, aged 32 and 36, led police to discover plastic packets containing drugs and a kerambit along with its sheath.

"Preliminary urine screening revealed that both suspects, who are unemployed, tested positive for drugs, with the Malaysian suspect also having six prior criminal records," he said when contacted today.

Mohd Nasyim said following the arrest of the main suspect in the Geng Musang case, police believed they had dismantled the criminal group and resolved five ECRL cable theft cases reported in the Temerloh and Bentong areas between August and September 2025.

He added that the two suspects were remanded until tomorrow to assist with investigations under Section 379 of the Penal Code, Section 39A(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, and Section 6(1) of the Corrosive and Explosive Substances and Offensive Weapons Act 1958.

Previously, Bernama reported that police had arrested eight members of Geng Musang and Geng Jep Gambang suspected of stealing and buying ECRL project cables, with estimated losses exceeding RM825,000.

All of them, aged between 29 and 45, were detained in raids conducted in Temerloh, Kuantan, and Bentong from Sept 10 to 14.

China Communications Construction (ECRL) Sdn Bhd (CCCECRL) recently reported that cables measuring 1,080 metres along the Temerloh-Lanchang stretch and 599 metres along the Lanchang-Bentong stretch were stolen over a period of only two weeks, potentially affecting the project's completion schedule. - Bernama
