MMEA officer slapped with 10 graft charges

JOHOR BARU: A Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) officer has been charged at the Sessions Court here with 10 counts of corruption.

Muhamad Azizi Kamali, 40, who holds the rank of Laskar Kanan Maritim T4, pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him in court on Friday (Nov 21).

He was accused of asking for and receiving amounts ranging from RM200 to RM700 from a company as inducements to prevent enforcement action against its boats by the Langkawi MMEA.

He was said to have received the funds monthly through a middleman from 2022 to 2023.

The charges were framed under Section 165 of the Penal Code for allegedly obtaining valuable things without consideration from a person concerned with his official function.

If found guilty, Azizi could face a jail term of up to two years, or a fine, or both.

Sessions judge Ahmad Kamal Arifin Ismail allowed bail of RM10,000 with one surety, and set Dec 22 for next mention.
