PM: African Free Trade Area, Asean cooperation set to bolster regional growth

ADDIS ABABA: Connecting the African Continental Free Trade Area with Asean will open new growth areas and boost regional interconnectivity, resulting in direct benefits to the people, says Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

The Prime Minister said this was among the messages relayed during his meeting with the African Union Commission, Mahamoud Ali Youssouf.

He said Malaysia is also willing to share its expertise in various fields, in line with Africa’s development agenda.

This includes Islamic finance, digital economy, sustainable infrastructure development and in high-value commodity sectors such as palm oil.

“Malaysia will continue to strengthen its relations with African nations, based on genuine friendship, solidarity and mutual understanding and respect,” he said after the meeting.

The Prime Minister also congratulated Mahamoud on his appointment as AUC commissioner in September.

“The reopening of the Malaysian embassy in Addis Ababa will be an important catalyst to widen the network of cooperation with countries under the African Union,” he said.

The African Union is a 55-member organisation that was established in 2002.
