Anwar’s visit marks new chapter in Malaysia-Ethiopia partnership, says Abiy Ahmed

ADDIS ABABA: Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s visit to Ethiopia marks a new chapter in south-south partnership, grounded in a commitment to shared economy, inclusivity, solidarity and human dignity, says Ethiopian Prime Minister Dr Abiy Ahmed Ali.

"Our two countries form a bridge between Asia and Africa, through cooperation and shared prosperity," Abiy said.

Describing discussions with Anwar as productive and forward-looking, Abiy said Ethiopia seeks to deepen cooperation with Malaysia in key areas, including investment, banking and finance, and skills development for youth.

He said Ethiopia hopes to learn from Malaysia’s success in attracting investments to industrial parks and the electronics sector.

The leaders also discussed boosting youth employment in Ethiopia, especially ensuring skills training meets industry demands and standards.

"We have a big number of skilled employees and youngsters. We want to learn how best to link the young to industries," he said at a joint press conference with Anwar on Wednesday (Nov 20) night.

Abiy said their talks included Ethiopia’s green agenda and preparations to host the 32nd UN Climate Change Conference (COP32) in 2027.

"For this, we need partners like Malaysia to support and help us deliver the best COP in Africa," he added.

He also highlighted discussions on the importance of innovation, boosting investment and data-driven development.

Anwar’s visit coincides with 60 years of diplomatic relations between Malaysia and Ethiopia. He is the first Malaysian Prime Minister to visit Ethiopia.
