Plan for cops in schools under study, says Home Ministry

KUALA LUMPUR: The Home Ministry is studying a proposal to station police officers permanently or semi-permanently at high-risk schools, says Datuk Seri Dr Shamsul Anuar Nasarah.

The Deputy Home Minister said the police already deploy school liaison officers (PPS) across the country, covering both primary and secondary institutions.

“The police have 10,435 PPS at 10,245 schools, involving 7,776 primary schools and 2,469 secondary schools, regardless of whether they are in urban or rural areas,” he said in the Dewan Rakyat on Thursday (Nov 20).

Shamsul said the ministry is also working to make it easier for students, parents and the public to lodge complaints or provide information.

“This includes student and parent complaint boxes, and the public can also channel information to the police through its application,” he said.

He added that PPS officers provide a direct avenue for reporting misconduct or safety concerns.

“We are ready to receive information not only from administrators, but also from members of the school community who can submit reports directly to the police,” he said.
