International community must consider sanctions on Israel, says Tok Mat

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia is urging the international community to consider punitive diplomatic and economic measures against Israel, reiterating that the regime must be held accountable for clear violations of international law, says Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan.

Mohamad said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim delivered this position firmly at the Extraordinary Arab-Islamic Summit in Doha on Sept 15, where leaders from the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) unanimously condemned Israel’s continued military aggression.

"In his address, the Prime Minister stressed that Israel’s actions - which clearly violate international law, the United Nations Charter and universal humanitarian principles - cannot be allowed to continue. He also urged the international community to consider punitive measures, including diplomatic approaches and economic sanctions, as pressure on Israel to stop its blatant violations of international law," Mohamad said in a parliamentary written reply on Wednesday (Nov 19).

The Rembau MP added that Malaysia’s stance is that collective action among OIC member states, the Arab League and other international organisations is essential to ensure Israel faces "firm and effective consequences" for its illegal actions.

"Malaysia continues to support efforts to bring Israel to justice at international judicial bodies," he said.

He added that Putrajaya’s commitment on the humanitarian front also remains unchanged, noting Malaysia has channelled RM74mil in aid to the Palestinian people since October 2023, with an additional RM100mil announced by Anwar in August for Gaza’s relief and reconstruction.

Mohamad said the Government will continue working with NGOs under Ops Ihsan to coordinate emergency aid deliveries, while monitoring developments at the Rafah border crossing following the Gaza Peace Plan.
