Three Japanese men held at KLIA with 12kg of cocaine

SEPANG: Three Japanese men have been detained for allegedly trying to smuggle in 12kg of cocaine worth RM2.4mil at the Kuala Lumpur International Airport (KLIA).

The Malaysian Border Control and Protection Agency (AKPS) said the suspects had the drugs in their luggage when they were detained at about 1.45am on Tuesday (Nov 18).

"The suspects had arrived from Bangkok when the seizure was made," AKPS said in a statement on Wednesday (Nov 19).

"We detected suspicious images during routine baggage scans at the International Arrival Hall.

"A physical inspection of one of the six checked-in suitcases, along with several backpacks, revealed packages believed to contain cocaine."

AKPS said the packages of drugs had been vacuum-sealed and disguised with layers of dried anchovies and dried shrimp in an apparent attempt to evade detection.

"A full inspection later confirmed that all six suitcases contained cocaine, with an estimated total value of RM2.4mil.

"The three men were arrested and are being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.

"The case has since been handed over to the Customs Department’s Narcotics Division for further action," AKPS said.
