Sabah polls: Prioritise unity over ambition, says Shafie

KOTA KINABALU: Candidates in the state election should prioritise uniting Sabahans over political ambition, says Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal (pic).

The Parti Warisan president said the many multi-cornered contests reflect divisions in local politics.

“There must be leadership at national and state levels to ensure unity,” he said on Wednesday (Nov 19).

“Unite the people not through your party or ambitions, but based on locals’ basic needs,” added Shafie.

He spoke to reporters after an event in Kota Belud.

“It is important for Malaysians in Sabah to use this opportunity to unite the people,” he said.

Shafie questioned the billions spent in the state budget while water and electricity issues persist.

“Electricity is still an issue. Why would investors come to Sabah,” he added.

He said even urban residents face these problems, and asked how foreign and peninsula tourists would view Sabah under such conditions.

Shafie cited the Warisan administration’s 2018–2020 record in supporting tourism.

“We facilitated loans for AirAsia to bring Chinese tourists to Kota Kinabalu and I told Tan Sri Tony Fernandes to ensure tourists do not transit at KLIA,” he added.

Shafie then urged Kota Belud voters to choose a new representative.

“We should not rely on old faces. I am confident we can change the situation in Kota Belud if given the chance to administer Sabah,” he added.

Kota Belud comprises the state seats of Usukan, Tempasuk and Pintasan.

Warisan has fielded candidates in all 73 seats for the Nov 29 Sabah polls.

Shafie will defend Senallang in Semporna.

The state election records 596 candidates vying for 73 seats.
