KUALA LUMPUR: The brother of the man swept away by the Pintasan Saloma water surge says the victim called him at about 3pm on Monday (Nov 17).
“I managed to contact my brother at about 3pm and he told me it was raining where he was working,” said K. Suren.
He said his brother, K. Suresh, 34, had worked about 70 days at the site as a construction supervisor.
He said Suresh is believed to have been swept away by a sudden surge in the Klang River near Pintasan Saloma on Monday.
Suren said their father alerted him to the incident at about 8.30pm.
“My brother could swim and had taught others to swim but in strong, fast moving water it may have been difficult to do anything,” he added.
The victim, who lived in Rawang, Selangor, is married and had a six year old son.
Family members were at the scene to get updates on the search and rescue operation.
At about 5.30pm on Monday, the Kuala Lumpur Operations Movement Centre received an emergency call via the Titiwangsa Fire and Rescue Station.
A fire engine and personnel from Titiwangsa and Jalan Hang Tuah stations were dispatched to the scene.
The team found 12 victims trapped under the bridge.
Rescuers carried out a rope rescue and saved 11 victims, comprising one Malaysian and ten foreigners.
One victim was reported missing.
The missing victim is believed to have been swept away while trying to move a vehicle parked under the bridge.
He had just noticed the sudden flood surge.
