KUCHING: Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar has made history as the longest-serving State Legislative Assembly Speaker in Malaysia when he was reappointed to the position for the Sarawak Assembly on Tuesday (Nov 18).
Mohamad Asfia, 78, was sworn in to the position in a ceremony held before the Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Dr Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar at the Sarawak State Astana, which was also witnessed by Sarawak Premier Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg and his deputy, Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas.
According to a statement from the Sarawak State Assembly, the re-appointment is effective for a period of two years starting Nov 16, 2025, until Nov 15, 2027.
Mohamad Asfia has held the position since Nov 15, 2000.
His tenure of more than two decades makes him one of the most experienced legislative figures in the history of the country's administration.
"The reappointment for the 10th term reflects the state government’s confidence in Tan Sri Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia’s leadership, experience and continued commitment in leading Sarawak’s highest legislative institution,” the statement said.
Mohamad Asfia’s professional qualifications include a Bachelor of Laws from Leeds University, England, and a Barrister-at-Law qualification from Inner Temple, London.
He also holds a postgraduate qualification in Port and Shipping Management from the University of Wales, Cardiff.
Mohamad Asfia began his career as legal advisor to the Sarawak Timber Industry Development Corporation from 1974 to 1976 before serving as a lawyer from 1976 to 2000.
In addition, he has held important positions in the corporate and media sectors, including chairman of Interfinance Berhad (1980-1991) and editor-in-chief of Sarawak Tribune newspaper (1990-2000).
In the state's political and administrative arena, he served as the assemblyman for Kuala Rajang and Serdeng/Semop constituencies, and held the position of Deputy Speaker of the Sarawak State Assembly from 1995 to 2000 before being appointed Speaker in 2000.
He also holds the position of permanent chairman of Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) and chairman of the party's Constitutional Committee. – Bernama
