Underwear heist spree ends as Johor cops nab 31-year-old suspect

ISKANDAR PUTERI: A string of underwear thefts from homes here have been solved with the arrest of a 31-year-old man in Gelang Patah at 630pm on Sunday (Nov 17).

Police have been searching for the thief following a report lodged by a man on the thefts at 8.21pm on Thursday, according to Iskandar Puteri OCPD Asst Comm M. Kumarasan said in a statement.

ACP Kumarasan said the 50-year-old man in his report had stated that his underwear and his wife’s lingerie, which were hung on the patio of their house in Taman Mutiara, were missing.

“The couple found out their underwear had gone missing on Nov 13 at 3.10pm,’’ added ACP Kumarasan.

He said police also seized 52 pieces of women’s bras, 12 pieces of women’s panties, two pieces of men’s underwear and a hanger.

ACP Kumarasan said the arrest may have also solved four cases of missing lingerie in areas in Mutiara Rini and Gelang Patah, which occurred in May and November this year.

“Initial investigation found the suspect has no previous criminal record and tested negative for drugs,’’ he said, adding that the suspect has been remanded from Nov 17 to 20 to assist with the investigation.

The case is being investigated under Section 379 of the Penal Code.

Section 379, is the punishment for theft, which involves imprisonment for a term that can extend to seven years, a fine or both.

For a second or subsequent offence, the punishment can include both imprisonment and a fine, or whipping.

ACP Kumarasan also called upon those with information on crime-related activities in Iskandar Puteri to go to the nearest police station or call the Iskandar Puteri Police District Control Centre at 07-5113622 or Hotline at 07-5114486.
