Johor assembly erupts in laughter after deputy speaker makes 'ChatGPT' quip

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor state assembly sitting broke into brief laughter when Deputy Speaker Datuk Samsolbari Jamali addressed one of the state assemblymen as "ChatGPT".

The remark came after Datuk Zulkurnain Kamisan (Barisan - Sri Medan) delivered his speech during the debate on the state Budget 2026 at Kota Iskandar on Monday (Nov 17).

Zulkurnain began by telling the hall he was feeling unwell and asked for forgiveness if he sounded unclear.

He then gave a lively 35-minute speech, touching on issues such as internet connectivity, welfare, and voicing support for the state government’s policies and financial aid for the people.

At the end, Samsolbari thanked him for his speech and said, "Inilah ChatGPT (this is how ChatGPT is); sick but they don’t seem sick at all," prompting laughter from the other assemblymen.

Earlier, Samsolbari disallowed an attempt by Hasrunizah Hassan (Barisan - Pulai Sebatang) to interject during Datuk Sahruddin Jamal’s (Perikatan - Bukit Kepong) debate speech.

Sahruddin was expressing disappointment towards a deputy minister from Pontian, believed to be Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan, who reportedly said he did not feel like answering a question posed by a Johor MP in Parliament recently.

Ahmad had earlier chided the opposition at the Dewan Rakyat on Nov 5 for making extensive demands despite not supporting Budget 2026.

Hasrunizah stood up to voice her satisfaction with Sahruddin’s statement, citing rule 45(13) of the Johor state legislative assembly Standing Rules and Orders, which prohibits members from imputing improper motives or using offensive expressions.

Samsolbari told Hasrunizah to sit down, stating that Sahruddin had not named anyone, and allowed him to continue.
