Asean and China to join forces on food security

PUTRAJAYA: The Ninth Asean-China Sanitary and Phytosanitary Cooperation Meeting agreed to continue Asean-China collaboration on food, agriculture and forestry, with a focus on improving trade, technological adoption and the use of the electronic certification platform developed by China and the Asean Single Window.

The collaboration also includes coordinating mechanisms and standards related to sanitary and phytosanitary matters, as well as expanding training programmes and human capital development.

The Agriculture and Food Security Ministry said in a statement that the meeting also agreed to continue working together to ensure the success of the Asean-China Cooperation on Sanitary and Phytosanitary Action Plan for 2026-2027, which serves as the main reference document for Asean-China cooperation.

“The key aspects of the cooperation include facilitating trade without compromising food security and safety, safeguarding health and harmonising standards, and sharing best practices to prevent the spread of livestock and crop diseases,” the ministry added in the statement.
