Jobless man changes plea in stabbing case

KUANTAN: An unemployed man who previously pleaded guilty to causing grievous bodily harm to a farmer by stabbing him in the abdomen late last month changed his plea at the Sessions Court here on Thursday (Nov 13).

Jabalul Akhir Mat Shafie, 25, pleaded not guilty after the charge against him was read out again before judge Azman Mustapha.

He was charged with intentionally inflicting injuries that could have been life-threatening on Nik Zuraidi Mohamed, 38, by stabbing him with a weapon at Jalan Bakti, Kampung Sri Damai Batu 7, Jalan Gambang near here at 6.40pm on Oct 31.

The charge falls under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which carries a penalty of up to 20 years in prison, and may also include a fine or whipping upon conviction.

On Nov 6, the accused had pleaded guilty to the charge, and the court had fixed Wednesday for case mention and sentencing.

The court set Dec 5 for remention.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Anuarul Hakim Abdul Muen urged the court to refuse bail, while the defence lawyer, Muhamad Saifuldin Ab Rahman, stated that they would not be applying for bail, citing concerns for his client's safety.

On Nov 2, media reports stated that a farmer sustained abdominal injuries after being stabbed by an acquaintance in the residential area of Kampung Sri Damai, Jalan Gambang, near here. - Bernama
