Fahmi outlines coverage goals for Malaysia's second 5G network

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia’s second 5G network, which is developed by U Mobile Sdn Bhd, must achieve 80% 5G coverage in populated areas within the first year of operations, says Datuk Fahmi Fadzil.

The Communications Minister stated that the network must achieve 95% coverage by the third year of its Detailed Business Plan (DBP).

He said U Mobile Sdn Bhd’s plan also includes implementing a standalone 5G network, developing in-building solutions (IBS) within four years, expanding its fibre optic network and supporting enterprise 5G applications.

“U Mobile planned to upgrade 6,515 sites to 5G in its first year of operation, beginning July 14, 2025. As of Oct 31, 2,976 sites have been upgraded, providing 58.2% 5G coverage in populated areas. In addition, 11 buildings have been equipped with 5G infrastructure,” he said.

“These sites will begin operations in stages according to the company’s rollout schedule,” Fahmi said in a written reply to Datuk Yusuf Abd Wahab (GPS–Tanjong Manis) on Thursday (Nov 13).

Fahmi said the government’s dual 5G network model would create a more competitive telecommunications landscape, encouraging innovation and better service quality.

He added that under the Jendela initiative, the ministry and the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) would continue to closely monitor the rollout of 5G.
