Kuala Lumpur: A total of 3,630 individuals – including civil servants, personnel from private and government-linked companies, and politicians – were convicted for various offences by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) between 2020 and September this year, says Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said.
The Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department (Law and Institutional Reform) said that out of this total, 1,945 were arrested for receiving bribes, 384 (giving bribes), 341 (abuse of power), 720 (false claims), 44 (money laundering) and 196 (other offences).
During the same period, she said the MACC received 36,937 reports on graft-related and non-corruption-related offences.
“For reports that do not involve corruption elements, action was taken through the opening of Governance Investigation Papers or by referring them to the relevant departments and enforcement agencies for further action,” she told Tan Kar Hing (PH- Gopeng) who wanted to know the effectiveness of the MACC in fighting corruption.
Among members of the public, 888 people were nabbed for receiving bribes, 348 people for giving bribes, 909 people for false claims, 129 people for abuse of power, 65 people for money laundering and another 166 for other offences.
