A MAN in India, who had previously abandoned his wife and daughter, has now forced the wife’s family to hand over her body after they were paid a large sum of compensation for her death, Makkal Osai reported.

The woman, who was not named, was one of the 41 people who died in a stampede during South Indian cinema star Vijay’s political party rally last month.

The woman’s mother said the man never once visited her daughter or granddaughter after they became estranged within a year of their wedding.

The older woman had taken in her daughter and granddaughter after the abandonment.

The husband did not even see his wife’s body after the incident.

But after Vijay announced two million rupees in compensation for victims who died, the man turned up at the funeral and wanted to claim his wife’s body.

He also took his daughter and eventually collected the compensation money.

The grandmother has urged the authorities to intervene and ensure the money goes to her granddaughter instead of the man.
