Crickey! Huge croc spotted at Mengkabong River

KOTA KINABALU: A huge crocodile was sighted at the Mengkabong River off Tuaran, not far from here and wildlife officials are hunting for it.

Sabah Wildlife Department said they received a report about the reptile on Wednesday (Nov 5), and a team was immediately sent to respond.

A patrol in the area was mounted to try and trap the crocodile, but it was nowhere to be seen when they arrived.

As dusk fell, they had to return to shore for safety reasons, said an officer from the department.

Officials are in the midst of setting up traps in the area where the crocodile was first sighted.

The Mengkabong River is part of a sunset river cruise route, where visitors get to enjoy the river view while catching the sunset, watch fireflies, catch crabs and fish as well as mangrove sightseeing among other attractions.

Tour and business operators as well as villagers in the area have been informed about the crocodile's presence and were advised to be extra cautious.
