Health Ministry working to resolve insurance claim issues

PUTRAJAYA: The Health Ministry is in discussions with Bank Negara and the Finance Ministry concerning the delays or denials of insurance claims for cancer patients.

“We acknowledge the concerns regarding medical insurance claim delays or denials affecting cancer patients and take this matter seriously,” the ministry said in a statement yesterday.

“Feedback from patients and stakeholders highlights the financial strain associated with prolonged or intensive treatment.

“No Malaysian, especially those battling cancer and other severe medical conditions, should be forced to delay care or face undue financial hardship.

“We are engaging with relevant stakeholders to better understand the issues related to claims processes, guarantee letters and treatment coverage.

“We will also explore ways to strengthen patient protection,” the ministry told The Star.

According to the statement, the ministry welcomes and supports the Grievance Mechanism Committee established by Bank Negara together with industry representatives.

“This platform provides a more structured avenue to resolve disputes, including matters related to claims, guarantee letters and access to treatment.

“It also supports more timely and transparent outcomes for patients and providers,” the statement added.

“Our broader objective, in line with Universal Health Coverage, is to ensure that patients can access essential care without facing catastrophic financial hardship.

“We will continue working closely with Bank Negara and other relevant agencies to improve protection for patients and ensure fair, timely access to treatment,” added the ministry.

Meanwhile, Finance Minister II Datuk Seri Amir Hamzah Azizan said the government is looking at controlling inflation and widening insurance base coverage to tackle soaring medical costs.

He also said diagnosis-related groups are among the important aspects of addressing the issue.

“We have agreed to expand insurance coverage in Malaysia, as not everyone is currently protected. Those who are not protected will have to go back to the government (healthcare),” he said at the Dewan Rakyat yesterday.
